Dr. Yarzebski has devoted his academic career to the study of CHD and has been actively involved in community-based studies of CHD surveillance; he has served as Project Director of the Worcester Heart Attack Study (WHAS) and Worcester Heart Failure Study (WHFS) since 1990 and 2007, respectively. Dr. Yarzebski is responsible for the coordination of day-to-day operations needed to carry out these multi-hospital, multi-year surveillance studies, participates in the design of data collection instruments, oversees and participates in data collection related activities and review of medical records of greater Worcester residents hospitalized with acute myocardial infarction as well as acute and decompensated heart failure, collaborates in the interpretation of the analyses of data from this study and write-up of the findings. During the last several years, Dr. Yarzebski has been training, educating and teaching the methodological approaches that are used in community surveillance of chronic disease to a group of research nurses and physicians that participate in data collection activities of the WHAS and WHFS.
