As clinical director at the Marlborough campus, I have the privilege of showing residents how things are done in a community hospital setting, which is where many residents will end up when their training is done. Things are a little different here than at the big academic hospital: there is more emphasis on efficiency, the patients are different, and community surgeons have different priorities. I was in private practice for a number of years before joining the UMass system in 2001. Interacting with residents has helped keep anesthesiology fresh and interesting for me.
My path into anesthesiology was a bit indirect. I went into medical school assuming that I would be a "regular" doctor, and I actually completed my training in internal medicine. All through my training, however, I found that I particularly enjoyed performing technical procedures, and I enjoyed being in the operating room when I had the opportunity. (I never, of course, even remotely considered becoming a surgeon!) I soon realized that a career in anesthesiology would allow me to combine the areas of medicine which I find the most fulfilling, and I have never regretted that decision.
My wife is also a physician, so we certainly have a busy household. My three daughters are all very proud of the fact that they are the only kids in their classes who can spell the word "anesthesiologist."
