        A Longitudinal Programin Clinical Anatomy

         

        As practices in medical education move toward integrated curricula, core concepts in the basic sciences continue to be recognized as the foundation of sound medical practice. Anatomy remains one of the most important of these foundational studies. The Human Gross Anatomy course at UMMS has long been a multi-dimensional experience that combines traditional academic study with clinical application. The anatomy curriculum also offers additional opportunities for study to students and residents at all levels of training through an innovative Longitudinal Program in Clinical Anatomy. This is based on the philosophy that, through long-term exposure and practice, students will learn to utilize anatomic concepts confidently and reflexively in a clinical environment.

         

        Initiated in 1989, the goal of the program has been to expose students to anatomy throughout their medical education, continually refreshing and advancing their understanding of the role it plays in medical practice. Its strategy is to recognize and exploit the different academic foci of students at each level of their training. More specifically, this involves providing clinical references for anatomic principles in the basic science years and a patient-centered review of anatomy for students in their clinical clerkships. In advanced programs, such as 4th year clinical anatomy electives and segments embedded within the core curricula of residency programs, a return to the dissection lab narrows the focus to areas of anatomy that are relevant to specific fields of clinical medicine.
