        Brief Biography

Historian of medicine Ellen More, Ph.D., joined the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) in 2006 to head the new Office of Medical History and Archives (OMHA) at the Lamar Soutter Library. She is also Professor of Psychiatry at UMMS. The Office of Medical History and Archives collects and preserves materials that document the history of UMMS. It also supports historical research, teaching, and other activities that highlight the history of American medicine and health care. Before joining UMMS, she was professor of history of medicine and medical humanities at the Institute for the Medical Humanities of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Dr. More's major research and teaching interests include the history of American medicine and health care with an emphasis on the history of women, the history and uses of the concept of empathy in medicine, the history and ethics of the professions, and the politics of sexuality and sex education in modern America. She is the author of Restoring the Balance: Women Physicians and the Profession of Medicine, 1850-1995 (Harvard, 1999; paperback, 2001), winner of the Rossiter Prize from the History of Science Society, The Empathic Practitioner: Empathy, Gender, and Medicine (Rutgers, 1994), co-edited with Maureen Milligan, and a forthcoming collection, Gender, Health and Power: Women Physicians Confront the Culture of Medicine (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2008), co-edited with Elizabeth Fee and Manon Parry. She was also Visiting Curator for the National Library of Medicine exhibition "Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America's Women Physicians," 2003-2005, which is now touring as a traveling exhibition.
