Dr. Deligiannidis completed her undergraduate degrees in Biology and
Psychology and an Honors Scholars Research Program in Neuroscience and Behavior
at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. As a recipient of NIH pre-doctoral
Intramural Research Training Awards, she trained in molecular neuroendocrinology
research at the NIH/National Institutes of Child Health and Human Development
(NIH/NICHD). Her research was in the neural regulation of melatonin in the pineal
gland and chronobiology in mood disorders.
Dr. Deligiannidis completed additional research training at the National Institute
of Mental Health (NIMH) and NICHD during medical school and residency. She received
her medical degree from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and completed
her psychiatry residency and chief residency in psychopharmacology research
at UMass Medical School (UMMS)/UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC). Dr. Deligiannidis
joined faculty at UMMS in October 2009 as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry.
She has Board Certification from the American board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
Dr. Deligiannidis is the Director of the Depression Specialty Clinic, a regional
referral center at UMMHC that specializes in the evaluation and treatment of
adult patients suffering from major depression, psychotic depression, treatment-resistant
depression and bipolar depression. She also is a consultant in the Mood Disorders
Comprehensive Consultation Clinic.
Dr. Deligiannidis also evaluates and treats women in the Women’s Mental Health
Specialty Clinic at UMMHC. She provides initial evaluations and short-term treatment
of women suffering from depression and anxiety during pregnancy or the post-partum
period.
Dr. Deligiannidis conducts translational research in the causes of depression
in women, with a focus on that which occurs in pregnancy and the postpartum
period. She evaluates women enrolled in depression research. Her research interests
include:
- Psychoneuroendocrinology (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and gonadal axes,
gonadal hormones and neuroactive steroids)
- Neuroimaging and neuroendocrine biomarkers of depression in women during
the perinatal period
- Gender differences in depression and treatment response
- Neuroimaging (e.g. MRS, fcMRI, PET)
Dr. Deligiannidis serves on several national and local committees with work
focused on research in depression, women’s mental health and psychopharmacology
and neuroimaging. She is additionally active in curriculum development and teaching
in the areas of psychopharmacology, evidence-based medicine and women’s mental
health.

Dr. Deligiannidis is an appointed Young Investigator Member of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology (ISPNE) and a member of the Society of Biological Psychiatry (SOBP), the Society of Behavioral Neuroendocrinology (SBE), the Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM), and the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology (ASCP). She serves on the Board of Directors of ASCP and on the Trainee Advisory Board for the international journal, Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica.
