Ken Appelbaum, MD Kenneth L. Appelbaum, MD is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry and the Director of Mental Health Policy and Research for the UMass Center for Health Policy and Research.  Prior to assuming his current role in 2007, Dr. Appelbaum spent nine years as Director of Mental Health for UMass Correctional Health, with responsibility for the mental health program and services provided to all inmates in Massachusetts Department of Correction facilities, including Bridgewater State Hospital.

Dr. Appelbaum’s current activities include consultations on program management or litigation regarding statewide mental health services for prison inmates. His current research interests focus on correctional mental health, including epidemiology, service delivery models, administrative and clinical policies, self-injurious behaviors, and treatment of serious mental disorders.

1. Development of a national consortium for correctional mental health research.

2. Consultation on mental health services in state prison systems.

3. Mediation and arbitration of settlement agreements regarding mental health care in state prison systems.
