overview

Dr. Li is Professor of Medicine and Senior Biostatistician within the Division of Clinical Informatics and Computational Medicine, Department of Medicine. He investigates the patterns and mechanisms of geographic and sociodemographic disparities in health, health behaviors and human-neighborhood environment interactions. He has expertise in predictive modeling, analysis of medical claims data, design and analysis of sample surveys, observational cohorts, clinical registries, GIS, population studies, and evaluations of public health programs, policies and laws.

Dr. Li's lab conducts research on healthy aging, community influences on health and health behaviors, physical activity, nutrition, obesity, infectious diseases, pain, total joint replacement, substance misuse and abuse, outcomes research, and evaluation of public health programs and policies. His lab also provides biostatistical, GIS and data science support to EHR-based surveillance systems, clinical registries, observational cohort and RCT studies.

Post Docs

Postdoctoral fellows

Dr. Li's lab is recruiting post-doctoral fellows with strong interest and expertise in biostatistics and health data science. The fellows will have opportunities to work on several fuderally or state-funded health data science projects, gain expertise in population health surveillance and public health program evaluation using all payer cliams data (APCD), casemix data and electronic health records (EHRs).

Candidates who plan to pursue an independent research career are encouraged to apply. Candiates should hold doctoral degrees in biostatistics, data science, health services and policy research, health economics or related fields. Candidates should have excellent skills in teamwork, time management and communications with collaborators from multiple study sites. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in infectious disease, aging, and analysis of BIG data (e.g., EHRs, APCD or social media). Strong programing skills are required (SAS Statistis and SQL, R, and Stata).

To apply, please email a copy of CV with contact information of 3 references to Dr. Wenjun Li (Wenjun.Li@umassmed.edu).

Rotation Projects

Analysis of longitudinal health data

This rotation provides students with opportunities to learn basic concepts and skills in statistical analysis of observational cohorts, clinical registries, electronic health records (EHRs), hospital administrative data (also called case mix data including ED visits and hospital discharges), and all payer claims databases (APCD). Students are expected to conduct literature review, participate weekly lab meetings, and work on a small analytic project on a topic of own choice. At the end of rotation, students are expected to complete a brief manuscript/report and a poster presenation.

Rotation Projects

Health geography - neighborhoods and health

This rotation project provides students with opportunities to learn geographic analysis of health, health behaviors and health care. Students are expected to read literature on neighborhood social and built environmental influences on health, and lean new skills in use of Geogrpahic Information Systems (GIS) to create health maps and examine geographic variations in health and health care.  At the end of rotation, students are expected to complete a brief manuscript/report and a poster presenation.
