Dr. Patel attended Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School and Rutgers - Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences from 2006-13, where he completed the physician-scientist training program (PSTP). He received formalized training in the disciplines of stem cell biology and cancer biology. His doctoral thesis focused on the mechanisms of breast cancer resistance to chemotherapy and breast cancer dormancy in the bone marrow (Patel SA et al., J. Immunol. 2010; 184:5885-5894). He then completed Internal Medicine residency at Stanford University (2013-16) and Hematology/Oncology fellowship at Stanford University (2016-19), during which time he studied the leukemic stem cell niche in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He is board-certified in Internal Medicine (2016), Hematology (2019), and Medical Oncology (2019).

Dr. Patel specializes in acute leukemia, myeloid malignancies, myelodysplastic syndrome, myeloproliferative neoplasms, lymphoma, and bone marrow (stem cell) transplant. He believes strongly in servant leadership and hopes to empower his patients through advocacy. He envisions that his translational research focus in hematologic malignancies will ultimately help provide precision therapies for his patients.
