My area of special interest is neuroanesthesia. It offers several challenges and much variety. Challenges with patient positioning, the need for fibreoptic intubations for unstable cervical spines, invasive monitoring, and sometimes even having an awake patient. Neuroanesthesiologists sometimes even provide ambulatory anesthesia for microdiscectomy and awake craniotomy. In contrast, some days can be long with complex spine or tumor surgery.

Since I enjoy teaching, an academic practice was the choice for me. I feel the staff at UMass are awesome and a perfect place for nurturing and growth. The best part of being an anesthesiologist is that we are very interesting. Nearly everyone I know has fascinating hobbies. Who would have ever thought a "nice" Indian girl refuses an arranged marraige and decides to go to England stating, "I want to study further," and then goes skydiving in Switzerland? (I did do my parents proud with the Royal College Fellowship in London). I have travelled to most countries in Europe, as well as Australia and Hawaii, so I can plan a perfect itinery (no charge for that). Sometimes my friends and colleagues even ask me where they should go for their honeymoon.

So if you like a challenge and are thinking about a career in anesthesiology,UMass is the right choice.
