Academic BackgroundM.B.B.S., Baroda Medical College, Baroda, India, 1982 Postdoctoral TrainingBaroda Medical College, Baroda, India, Rotating Internship, 1981-82 New England Deaconess Hospital, Residency in Surgery, 1982-84 Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Residency in Anesthesiology, 1985-86 Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Clinical Fellowship in Anesthesiology, 1987-88 A member of the faculty for over twenty years, I am interested in resident and medical student education. Until recently, I was a member of the medical school admissions committee, a role I enjoyed thoroughly. Another interest of mine is various aspects of the history of anesthesiology, especially since the first public demonstration of general anesthesia took place in Boston over 150 years ago. I am also interested in regional anesthesia, mechanisms of local anesthetic action, invasive monitoring, and anesthetic considerations for trauma victims. I have always considered it very important to provide case-related teaching on a daily basis. I have incorporated such methods to prepare residents for the written and oral board examinations. I am a member of the Task Force for the Self Education and Evaluation (SEE) program of continuing medical education sponsored by the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Every year, the program publishes two booklets, each containing 100 multiple-choice questions related to recent advances in our specialty. Participants are provided with detailed discussions about each question, the research behind the topic, and references. This program has been extremely successful and has over 5000 subscribers throughout the nation and abroad. For the last few years, I have been actively involved in the Society for Education in Anesthesiology (SEA). I have beendoing Teaching and Learning Workshops for our faculty and residents. This course is based on the science and clinical application of teaching and learning theories. The goal is to create depth of knowledge and understanding of theoretical aspects of how and why learners learn, allowing for practical applications of education theory. It explores many techniques for enhancing teaching effectiveness.
