overview

Frederick A. Anderson, Jr., Ph.D. is Research Professor of Surgery and Quantitative Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, MA.

Beginning in 1973, Dr. Anderson was one of the principal developers (with H Brownell Wheeler) of the electrical impedance plethysmograph (IPG), one of the first noninvasive techniques for the diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). From 1986 through 1991, Dr. Anderson was Principal Investigator of the Worcester DVT Study, a five-year NIH-supported study of physician practices in the prevention and management of venous thromboembolism. From 1986 through 1993, he was a member of the board of directors of the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), and served as ARDMS Chair in 1991-1992.

Beginning in 1996, Dr. Anderson founded and directs the Center for Outcomes Research at UMMS, which serves as the scientific coordinating center for a variety of disease-focused, multinational observational studies, which include more than 1,000 hospitals in over 40 countries:

1.        The Global Orthopaedic Registry (GLORY), a multinational registry of outcomes for hip and knee replacement surgery (1995-2005)

2.        ALS Patient Care Database (ALS CARE), a North American registry of outcomes for patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (1996-2004) www.alscare.org

3.        Glioma Outcomes Program (GO Project), a North American multicenter study of the outcomes of brain tumor treatment (1997-2002) www.glioma.org

4.        Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE), a multinational study of the outcomes of ACS (1999-2010)

5.        International Medical Prevention Registry on Venous Thromboembolism (IMPROVE), a multinational study of practices in the use of prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism in hospitalized medical patients (2001-2006)

6.        Epidemiologic International Day for the Evaluation of Patients at Risk for Venous Thromboembolism in the Acute Hospital Care Setting (ENDORSE) A multinational study of the risk of venous thromboembolism in hospitalized patients (2005-2007)

7.        Studying the Treatment of Acute Hypertension (STAT) (2007-2008)

8.        Studying the Treatment of Acute Hypertension in European Hospitals (Euro-STAT) (2008-2010)

9.        Global Longitudinal Registry of Osteoporosis in Women (GLOW): A multinational study of practices in the prevention of osteoporotic fractures in women (2005-2013)

Additional information about these programs is available on the Internet at www.outcomes.org.

In 2011, Dr. Anderson was appointed Director of Research in the UMMS Department of Surgery and has worked in collaboration with Heena Santry to develop a Surgical Scholars Program to mentor surgical residents in developing clinical research skills.

Dr. Anderson has been an author on over 150 reports of original research published in peer-reviewed journals, as well as more than 20 book chapters.

Dr. Anderson received bachelor’s degrees in mechanical engineering and experimental psychology (1971) from Tufts University and masters (1975) and doctoral (1984) degrees in biomedical engineering from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
