Professor Luban is a physician-scientist who studies the interaction between human cells and deadly pathogens including HIV-1, Ebola virus, and SARS-CoV-2. He has held endowed professorships at Columbia University in New York (where he directed the Columbia-Rockefeller Center for AIDS Research), the University of Geneva in Switzerland, and now the University of Massachusetts Medical School, where he holds the David J. Freelander Chair in AIDS Research. He is an affiliate of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and oversees a program on SARS-CoV-2 as part of the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness. Dr. Luban was elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, and the American Academy of Microbiology. His research program in Virology, Immunology, and Molecular Biology has been continuously funded for the past 30 years by the National Institute of Health and includes Merit and Avant Garde Awards. He has served on editorial boards of four virology journals, on grant review committees and scientific advisory boards for the NIH, the American Cancer Society, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, and has acted as primary mentor for 90 Ph.D. students, post-docs, and undergraduate students.
