Dr. Ashraf Khan’s clinical interest includes diagnostic surgical pathology of Breast and Endocrine system. Dr. Khan is actively involved in clinical translational research focused in the field of thyroid and breast cancer investigating biomarkers that help in the diagnosis and prediction of outcome in these tumors. Over the past decade Dr. Khan has published several papers on the role of cell cycle regulatory proteins, translation initiation factors and cell adhesion molecules in the diagnosis of thyroid follicular tumors and progression of thyroid cancer. Dr. Khan was a key contributor of one large multi-institution international study published in The Lancet on the role of galectin 3 and CD44 in the diagnosis of thyroid malignancy. Dr. Khan’s collaboration with the basic scientists in the department of cancer biology at UMass has resulted in multiple projects includingb4-integrin signature in basal-like breast cancer which was recently published and Sox-9 expression in breast cancer which is work in progress. In addition Dr. Khan is a PI on a Department of Defense Grant in collaboration with Dr. Leslie Shaw in department of cancer biology looking at the Insulin Receptor Substrate Proteins (IRS1 and IRS2) in breast cancer with special focus on potential role they may play in Herceptin resistance in HER-2 positive breast cancer. He is also currently involved in studying the micro RNA signature in breast cancer especially estrogen receptor positive node negative tumors with potential therapeutic implications. Dr. Khan is a member of the UMASS graduate school of biomedical sciences representing cancer biology.

Dr. Khan is the past President and Secretary of the Endocrine Pathology Society, a companion society of the US and Canadian Academy of Pathology. He is a reviewer for a number of pathology and endocrinology journals, serves on the editorial board of the journal Endocrine Pathology and is the Section Editor (Endocrine Pathology) of the Archives of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. In addition to numerous original articles, Dr. Khan has authored many book chapters and invited reviews and is currently editing a text book on surgical pathology of endocrine tumors.
