Mary E. Maloney, MD, professor of medicine and director of dermatologic surgery, received her BA degree from Connecticut College. Dr. Maloney pursued her medical degree at the University of Vermont, graduating in 1977. She trained in internal medicine at Hartford Hospital through 1979, and then completed her dermatology residency in 1982 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic. This was followed by a research fellowship at the University of California at San Francisco in 1982 and a fellowship in dermatologic surgery in 1983. Maloney was on the medical faculty at Dartmouth and then at the University of Vermont before moving to the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in 1988 where she was promoted to professor of medicine and director of dermatological surgery. She moved to UMass Medical School in 1999 where she was the founding chair of the Department of Dermatology.

Maloney is a past president of the Association of Academic Dermatologic Surgery and past secretary of the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery. In 1999, she chaired both the Council on Education and the Scientific Assembly Council for the American Academy of Dermatology, with responsibility for the education and management of the largest dermatological scientific session in the world. She has served on the board of directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and was assistant secretary treasurer from 2004-2007 and secretary treasurer from 2007-2010.  She is the author of The Dermatologic Surgical Suite and has edited the Cutaneous Oncology and Surgical Dermatopathology textbooks. Maloney has been very active in leadership activities in dermatology. 

As director of dermatologic surgery, Maloney provides Mohs micrographic surgery for skin cancers and other surgical services to dermatological patients.
