Dr. Madelyn Hsiao-Rei Hicks is a cross-cultural psychiatrist with a background in medical anthropology whose research interests include sociocultural and epidemiological aspects of war, domestic violence, depression, immigration, and human rights. Her primary research focus is to combine public health, anthropological, psychiatric, and human rights perspectives to address the effects of violence and public health emergencies on vulnerable populations. Dr. Hicks trained as an undergraduate at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, (BA, Biology with Honors) and then on a scholarship at the University of Oxford, England (BA, MA, Zoology). After completing her medical training (MD, University of Louisville School of Medicine), she did a medical internship and psychiatric residency at Brown University. She became an NIMH-supported Research Fellow in Clinically Relevant Medical and Psychiatric Anthropology in the Department of Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School, followed by faculty positions in the department as an Instructor and then a Lecturer. After moving to the United Kingdom in1997, she worked in community mental health as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the National Health Service and was an Honorary Lecturer in the Department of Health Service and Population Research at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College London. She returned to the United States in 2012, where she is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at UMass Chan Medical School and a Staff Psychiatrist at Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital. Her activities have included speaking on the mental health effects of immigration detention on children and asylum seekers at United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) events; contributing to the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ position statement on physician-assisted suicide; speaking on physician-assisted suicide at the House of Lords; and advising on domestic violence guidelines for the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and a Distinguished Fellow of the Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in March 2020, Dr. Hicks initiated a proposal for a state psychiatric hospital COVID-19 unit at Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, which became the Massachusetts DMH statewide COVID-19 unit. She was a volunteer attending psychiatrist on the COVID-19 unit and has contributed to unit and hospital protocols to mitigate the risk for COVID-19 transmission in Massachusetts state psychiatric hospitals.
