The Lawrence Latino Diabetes Prevention Program

The primary aim of this proposal is to implement and evaluate a group-based diabetes prevention program for low-income, Latino patients at high risk of developing diabetes. Risk for diabetes will be defined by the use of predictive equations developed by Stern and colleagues, and the primary outcome will be a reduction in risk as defined by the same equations.

Diabetes Management for Low-Income Hispanic Patients

The overall goal of this randomized clinical trial (RCT) is to test the efficacy of an educationally-and culturally-tailored cognitive-behavioral intervention (CBI) designed to enhance adherence to diabetes self-management behaviors and thus improve glycemic control (HbA1c) among low-income Hispanic individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The primary outcome to be evaluated at 4- and 12- months following randomization is improvement in metabolic control (HbA1c). Secondary aims include the evaluation of the efficacy of the program on: 1) Adherence to self-management behaviors; 2) Other relevant factors including LDL-cholesterol, blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI) and quality of life (QOL).

Reducing Risk Factors in Peripheral Arterial Disease

In patients with peripheral arterial disease, this randomized, controlled clinical trial will test the ability of a telephone-counseling intervention to reduce low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels as compared to usual care and attention control conditions, respectively.

Markers for Type 2 Diabetes and Aptamer Array Diagnostics $47,223

The goal of this project is to identify new biomarkers for type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes and to ultimately measure new markers in a robust and reliable photoaptamer array diagnostic system.
