Appelbaum, MD is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry. From 2007 until 2017, he served as Director of Mental Health Policy and Research for the UMass Center for Health Policy and Research. From 1998 to 2007, Dr. Appelbaum was Director of Mental Health for UMass Correctional Health, with responsibility for the mental health program and services provided to all inmates in Massachusetts Department of Correction facilities, including Bridgewater State Hospital. Between 1987 and 1998, he served as Co-director of the UMMS Law and Psychiatry Program, director of the UMMS Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship program, and Director of the Forensic Service at Worcester State Hospital. |
Prior to retirement, Dr. Appelbaum’s activities included national consultations on mental health program management to state mental health systems and state correctional systems, and consultations to the Civil Rights and Civil Liberties division of the Department of Homeland Security on mental health services in immigration detention facilities. His research interests focused on correctional mental health, including epidemiology, service delivery models, administrative and clinical policies, self-injurious behaviors, and treatment of serious mental disorders.
