Biography

Sybil Crawford, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Biostatistics Research Group, Division of Preventive Medicine, Department of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Crawford has conducted research in women’s health for more than 17 years, with a particular focus on menopause. Her menopause-related research interests include body composition and cardiovascular risk factors, menopausal symptoms, assessment of menopause stages, and use of exogenous hormone therapy. Dr. Crawford led the statistical team at the Coordinating Center for the multi-site Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation (SWAN) until joining the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and continues with the project as a co-investigator. She also serves as the statistician on two pilot randomized clinical trials of non-pharmacologic interventions for hot flashes. Recently completed projects include analyses of bleeding patterns and reproductive hormones to refine definitions of menopause staging, of interest to both clinicians and their mid-aged patients. Dr. Crawford serves as a member of the editorial board for Menopause, a premier journal for scientific articles related to menopause. Additionally, she collaborates on studies of pregnancy-related issues such as preeclampsia, gestational weight gain, and medication use during pregnancy, as well as racial/ethnic differences in health and caregiving patterns for elders.
