Dr. Chris Teng is a board certified cataract and glaucoma specialist. He is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Dr. Teng received his undergraduate degree from The University of Chicago and Doctor of Medicine from SUNY Downstate College of Medicine. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at New York University Medical Center and fellowship in Glaucoma at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He received his MBA from Yale School of Management.

Dr. Teng provides care for medical and surgical glaucoma, as well as for cataracts and complex anterior segment situations. He performs glaucoma laser treatment, small incision cataract surgery, complex cataract surgery, secondary lens implantation, anterior segment reconstruction, iris repair, micro invasive glaucoma surgery (iStent, Goniotomy, Trabeculotomy, Gonioscopy Assisted Transluminal Trabeculotomy, Omni, Viscocanalostomy, Endocyclophotocoagulation, Xen implant, etc.), Cyclophotocoagulation, and traditional glaucoma surgery including Trabeculectomy and Glaucoma Drainage Implants.

Dr. Teng has been an invited speaker at institutions around the world, including at Prism Eye Rounds in 2020 and Taipei Veterans General Hospital in 2023. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and magazines and his article on the Effect of a Tight Necktie on Intraocular Pressure was ranked by Doximity as the #8 Ophthalmology article in history. He has lectured and presented his research at national and international meetings, including Brazil, Mexico, Romania, Korea, India, Nepal, China and the United Arab Emirates. His research and clinical interests include the optic nerve complex, parapapillary atrophy, glaucoma surgery, micro invasive glaucoma surgery, complex anterior segment and cataract surgery, optimizing resident education and training, improving patient education and access to care, and inclusivity in ophthalmology.

Dr. Teng is dedicated to patient care, resident and fellow education, and is an active participant in International Ophthalmology, having traveled to Nepal (Gorkha, Mustang, Pokhara, Dhalkebar) and India (Haridwar) for humanitarian trips with Operation Restore Sight. He is the recipient of an American Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement Award and two Secretariat Awards, for contributions to the Minority Ophthalmology Mentoring Program and the Surgical Scope Fund.

He has received an American Glaucoma Society Clinician Scientist Research Award, was awarded Lecturer of the Year at New York University, received the John S. Hermann, M.D. Memorial Award for Excellence in Teaching from The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and the Bruce Shields Award for Excellence in Teaching at Yale. Dr. Teng has been named one of the New York Super Doctors Rising Stars in Ophthalmology, and was named to The Ophthalmologist’s Top 40 Under 40 Power List. He is past President of the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and is past President of the Chinese American Ophthalmological Society.

Dr. Teng is an Associate Editor of Shields' Textbook of Glaucoma (7th edition), the premier succinct text on the medical and surgical management of glaucoma. He compiled the Chinese English Ophthalmology Dictionary, which has common Ophthalmology terms in Mandarin, Pinyin and English. He is a graduate of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Leadership Development Program and for his project made an educational video describing Ophthalmology, "What is Ophthalmology?". He also maintains an active YouTube cataract and glaucoma education page (glaucomavids), with over 100 videos, 2,000 subscribers and 700,000 views.
