    Research/Clinical Interests

Photo: Richard T Ellison IIIResearch Interests: Dr. Ellison's clinical research interests focus on the broad areas of identification and treatment of nosocomial infections, infections in the ICU setting, sepsis, and clinical care of patients with HIV disease. Recent work has been focused on the use of medical information system databases in identifying both infections and other adverse events in the inpatient setting; as well as novel approaches to preventing nosocomial infections. His laboratory research interests have been into the nature of innate antimicrobial host defense systems towards bacterial pathogens. This has involved studies of the complement system and antimicrobial proteins including lactoferrin, lysozyme, and natural antimicrobial peptides. More recent work has involved studies of a new class of antimicrobial agents active towards Gram-positive bacterial pathogens and bacterial antimicrobial resistance mechanisms.

Clinical Interests: Dr. Ellison provides subspecialty consultative care in the field of Infectious Diseases, as well as primary medical care to individuals with HIV disease.

PMC Citations indicate the number of times the publication was cited by articles in PubMed Central, and the Altmetric score represents citations in news articles and social media. (Note that publications are often cited in additional ways that are not shown here.) Fields are based on how the National Library of Medicine (NLM) classifies the publication's journal and might not represent the specific topic of the publication. Translation tags are based on the publication type and the MeSH terms NLM assigns to the publication. Some publications (especially newer ones and publications not in PubMed) might not yet be assigned Field or Translation tags.) Click a Field or Translation tag to filter the publications.
